Chevrolet (umgangssprachlich auch: Chevy) ist seit 1918 ein Warenzeichen, das dem General-Motors-Konzern (GM) angehört. Zuvor war es eine eigenständige Automobilfabrik. 1953 wurde die Chevrolet Corvette vorgestellt, der erste Sportwagen der Marke. Anfangs war der Wagen kein Verkaufserfolg, bis er sich dann doch durchsetzte und bis heute zum erfolgreichsten US-amerikanischen Sportwagen wurde. Spät, aber gerade noch rechtzeitig, folgte Chevrolet dem US-amerikanischen Trend zum V8-Motor. Der Achtzylinder wurde im Herbst 1954 eingeführt und auf Anhieb zum Erfolg. Der Chevrolet Bel Air der Modelljahre 1955 bis 1957 gilt bis heute als geradezu idealtypisches Beispiel für einen US-amerikanischen Familienwagen der 1950er Jahre.In den 1960er Jahren wurde Chevrolet zum Getriebenen. Erzrivale Ford führte mehrfach neue Modelle ein und erschloss damit neue Marktsegmente. Chevrolet folgte nur widerwillig und mit teils jahrelanger Verzögerung. Auf den Kompaktwagen Ford Falcon von 1959 folgte der Chevrolet Nova (1961), auf den Mittelklassewagen Ford Fairlane von 1961 der Chevrolet Chevelle (1963) und auf das Sportcoupé Ford Mustang von 1964 der Chevrolet Camaro (1966). Im letztgenannten Fall war die Verzögerung besonders peinlich, denn der Mustang war in seinen ersten Jahren ein großer Verkaufserfolg, und Chevrolet hatte ihm nichts entgegenzusetzen.
